We'll get to watts per channel and other fun features in a moment, but first you should know what really makes a Denon receiver something to write home about. The engineers at Denon go out of their way to make sure every Denon receiver delivers the absolute best sound. The AVR-1705 is certainly no exception. Its chassis is designed to absorb vibration, supporting its large transformer inside a highly rigid frame to secure it more solidly. In addition, a cushioning material is used around the core of the transformer to minimize interference on the signal and allow more faithful reproduction of the original sound. A Twin Drive Rectifier design brings out the maximum potential of this large transformer. Since the rectifiers recharge the large block capacitors at low impedance, they are able to supply ample current to accurately reproduce deep bass as well as sudden bursts of sound. A large heatsink made of extruded aluminum is placed in a design that ensures mostly uniform temperatures so that the output transistors for all channels can be driven under the same conditions. This ensures that all channels respond with equal performance to the demands of the audio signals. The aluminum face plate, in addition to looking great, also helps with the reduction of unwanted noise. As you can see, the design of a Denon receiver makes it the perfect home for its high quality amps and converters.
For optimum Dolby Digital and DTS reproduction, the AVR-1705 features high quality, wideband audio amplification, providing 75 watts of power output (8 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 0.08 percent THD) for each of its six main channels. A large capacity power supply includes a high current power transformer along with discrete power output devices on all six amplifier channels for the highest dynamic range and superb reproduction clarity. The power amp circuits of the AVR-1705 have been meticulously designed to reproduce exceptionally high sound quality with a wide frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. The 32-bit floating-point DSP processor -- the Hammerhead SHARC -- was carefully selected by Denon and supports single-instruction, multiple-data processing.
Component Video Conversion is an exciting feature, and it''s included in the AVR-1705 receiver. This video transcoding technology lets you enjoy the highest picture quality from all video gear connected to the receiver. Since composite and S-video signals are converted up to component video signals and output to the monitor, all you need to do is connect a monitor that can display component video images. That means you don''t have to connect different cables to your television for your DVD player, VCR, and whatever else you may want to get a signal from. Just connect your A/V components to the receiver, run one component video cable from the AVR685S to your television, and your new receiver does the rest.
So what does all of this painstaking engineering mean to you? Basically, it means that the audio from this Denon 75 watt per channel receiver will actually sound better than other 75 watt per channel receivers. When combined with today''s amazing surround sound technologies, the results are superb. The AVR-1705 faithfully recreates the surround sound produced at the dubbing stage, and it''s packed with the most modern surround sound format technologies. You''ll get the most out of today''s and tomorrow''s surround sound formats with features like DTS 96/24 decoding for DVD-video, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 and Matrix 6.1, DTS NEO:6, Dolby Digital EX and Dolby Pro Logic IIx. With these cutting edge decoders, the AVR-1705 will make the absolute most of any audio signal passing through.
Denon''s popular 6 channel stereo mode transforms your favorite 2-channel sources such as CD, tape, stereo radio and stereo video sources into exciting surround sound, free of delay effects and unnatural artifacts, from all six speakers. This 6 Channel Stereo mode was originally developed by Denon to enhance music lovers'' enjoyment of home theater ambience, but it now can be enjoyed with any source material. If you only have two speakers, you can still be surrounded with sensational 3D soundfield envelopment. The AVR-1705''s Virtual Surround mode provides a dramatic psychoacoustic surround sound effect using only two speakers with Dolby Digital 5.1 encoded sources.
With the sound processing capabilities of the AVR-1705, you''ll want to send all of your audio signals through it to make sure you get the best sound coming out. Good thing Denon prepared for this with a good selection of connections. The AVR-1705 is equipped with 3 sets of assignable component video inputs and 1 set of monitor outputs (all RCA terminals). 3 sets of full-bandwidth (100 MHz) component inputs means you can get the best possible signals from 3 different sources like DVD, high definition television broadcasts, and a Tivo unit, without having to change any wiring around. This model also has 3 sets of S-Video inputs, 7 analog inputs, as well as 3 Optical inputs and 1 output and a Coaxial digital audio input, for the best in sound transfer. The front panel A/V inputs include Optical for simple connection of a digital audio device.
As with all of Denon''s high-grade A/V receivers, the AVR-1705 lets you adjust delay times and other parameters so that you can customize the performance to suit your own home theater as well as enhance operating ease. The adjustments are easy to make on the fluorescent display on the front panel. These customized features are then stored, for each source input and surround mode, in Personal Memory Plus so constant readjustments are not required. You can also put yourself in the middle of your favorite concert hall and music envirionments with Denon''s DSP acoustic environment simulation modes. These DSP modes add spacious surround sound enhancements to your favorite music and video sources, and include these distinctly different sounding effects: 6 Channel Stereo, Virtual Surround, Rock Arena, Jazz Club, Video Game, Matrix and Mono Movie.
With a name like that, you can bet there isn''t much the AVR-1705 included remote control can''t do. It features a large selection of remote control codes to operate other components in your home theater system, including codes for selected Denon models, along with remote control codes from other manufacturers. The most frequently used buttons are laid out separately, providing easy access to TV, VCR and DVD controls. This easy-to-use remote combines with other convenient features like Personal Memory Plus to provide a receiver that is as nice to operate as it is to listen to.
